Valerian

Valerian, this is one of the most valued plants I have grown. I haven’t touched my plant for a few years as I want it to fill a large space so that when I do use it, I won't run out. Growing anywhere from 3 to 5 feet, mine stands taller, almost reaching 6 feet, and right now the patch is 4 feet in diameter. Valerian is a self-sowing perennial and once established will grow anywhere the seeds travel.

The reason this herb is valuable to me is that it's used to treat stress, insomnia, tension, and nervous disorders like PTSD. It depresses activity in the central nervous system, but also relaxes the smooth muscles of the colon, uterus, and bronchial passages.

Valerian also has tonic effects on the heart and is recommended in cases of irregular heartbeat and anxiety that affects the heart. Combined with Hawthorn berry it can treat high blood pressure. This herb is what can be used to help fall asleep since it can be made into a nerve tonic and muscle relaxant

The part to use is the roots. However, this plant can cause irritation and doesn’t work for everyone. Because of the volatile nature of its aromatic oils, valerian root is generally infused rather than decocted and don’t be afraid to use large amounts of this herb since it’s nonaddictive and will not make you feel groggy upon waking. Use a low dosage and increase until you feel the relaxing effects. Because of the aroma, some find it tolerable, others not so much, but the taste is a lot better than the aroma and many people prefer to take valerian as a tincture or in capsule form than a tea, though I plan to make tea since that’s my favorite drink. It’s all personal preference
