Lilac herbal information

Of all the plants that signal spring, very few come close to the sweet aroma of Lilac. Every year, regardless of rainfall, Lilac adorns yards across the state in a vibrant of colors. But did you know that Lilac is a hidden gem in the herb world when it comes to skin health? This ornamental plant is loaded with vitamins and minerals that, when made into an infusion, bring many benefits to the skin. Today, we will discuss Lilac.

The health benefits of Lilacs are numerous thanks to their antioxidant properties like that of flavonoids and polyphenols which neutralize harmful free radicals. These protect the skin from environmental damage but also help support the immune system by protecting immune cells from damage and supporting their function. This can help the body fight infections and illnesses more effectively. Certain compounds have anti-inflammatory effects which help reduce redness and soothe irritation, and the natural oils in lilac flowers help moisturize and hydrate the skin to improve softness.  Since Lilacs have mild astringent properties, this in turn makes the oil soothing for those with sensitive skin. The fragrance, which is a subtle, floral scent, gives Lilac aromatherapeutic effects and helps induce relaxation.

Extracts of the flowers have been shown to have antimicrobial properties that support skin health, while also boosting microcirculation in the skin for a radiant glow, while at the same time lilacs contain compounds that help protect skin from UV damage.

With all these benefits, what is Lilac salve good for then? In salve form, with the natural astringent benefits, lilac salve has been known to tighten skin, reduce wrinkles and pores, and the anti-fungal and antibacterial components make salve ideal for acne. It’s also a gentle remedy for minor skin irritations like cuts, scrapes, and sunburns. Like most of my products, most serve as other alternatives, like that of dandelion salve that can double as lip balm, Lilac salve can double as a solid perfume if you want something natural and light. Applied to lips, neck, navel, wrists or wherever.
